The 7th Biennial showed that the core within contemporary graphic art creativity had shifted from Europe to America and Japan. Young artists were at the forefront, whose work was technically sophisticated and interesting in content. The expression of abstract art became a classic notion, with symbols and depictions of objects, as well as the figurative, becoming more widespread. The appearance of expressive figuration (new image painting) can be noted within European printmaking. In technical terms, however, the Biennial highlighted the screen printing technique and its expressive effects filtering through from comics, newspapers, commercials and posters.
