The exhibition included fifteen aquatints made between 1964 and 1967. Emil Schumacher was an important representative of abstract expressionism in post-war Germany. In his works, he explored the perception of the sense of pictorial representation within abstract space. In printmaking, it was the techniques of intaglio printing, especially etching and aquatint, that most suited his approach. It was for his etchings that he received an award at the Biennial.
