Moderna galerija, Ljubljana

Lojze Spacal, Karst Door, 1961, colour woodcut; recipient of the International Jury Prize, 3rd International Exhibition of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana, 1959.

The exhibition included fifteen woodblocks made between 1958 and 1961. They depicted Spacal’s vision of cities, properties and ruins, so objects that carry traces of decay; hence their dull colours. All this was marked by the artist’s interest in matter (stone, mortar and especially wood). The structure of wood offered him a series of visual elements that were the building blocks of his images, which is why he remained dedicated to the woodblock technique.
