Seungyeon Kim, Night Landscape 9406, 1994, mezzotint; recipient of the International Jury Prize, 20th International Biennial of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana, 1993.
Seungyeon Kim is a South Korean graphic artist and a master of intaglio printmaking techniques, especially mezzotint. His night landscapes, which in addition to his street vedute are his main obsession when it comes to motifs, are based on photos of daytime events and ordinary things. The mezzotint technique, which requires great patience and time-consuming work, enables Kim to extract light out of darkness, which he does with strong contrasts. In a way, his works are romantic, showing the enchantment of the prints that reveal a forgotten cityscape, so a landscape that contemporary art has largely forgotten.
