Joe Tilson, The Homeric Hymn to Hermes, 1992, screenprint and woodcut; recipient of the Grand Prix d’Honneur, 21th International Biennial of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana, 1995.

The exhibition provided an overview of Tilson’s work since his Pop Art beginnings, with an emphasis on his latest works that show his departure from this style. The topics that Tilson picks for his works transcend time and are a cross-section of cultures; they draw on classical mythology, the dreamtime of Aboriginal Australians, the beliefs of American Indians and alchemy. His favourite printmaking technique is screenprinting, which he combines with other techniques, such as woodcut or lithography. His works, often of similar shapes, speak primarily with colour.
