Janez Bernik, 970/-89, 1989, etching; recipient of the Grand Prix d’Honneur for a Slovenian Artist, 19th International Biennial of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana, 1991.

The exhibition included fifteen etchings and aquatints made between 1972 and 1990. The exhibition focused on the overview of Bernik’s etchings and aquatints made from 1972 to the time just before the exhibition. The spectators could thus follow not only the artist’s printmaking progress, but also his stylistic development. The main emphasis was on the works made in the 1980s. In this period, the male figure returned to the artist’s world, appearing as a wise man or the Crucified, surrounded by flower motifs and landscapes. Colour is simplified and minimised to the extent that the artist can still achieve the greatest possible effect, albeit with refined means.
