Bernardí Roig, I. N. R. I., About Devotions Series, 1996, engraving; recipient of the International Jury Prize, 21th International Biennial of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana, 1995.

The exhibition included fifteen prints from two series made in 1996. Bernardí Roig convinced the jury of the 21st International Biennial of Graphic Arts with lithographs from his Vanitas cycle, in which he remarkably intertwines abstract and figurative representation. In his works, he explores the human condition. For the exhibition, he prepared his latest works in which he shifted from thinking about being and ceasing to a provocation that was very daring for catholic Spain. The content originates in the central human figure. The central place in his engravings belongs to an image of a saint that looks as if it were taken from an illustration in a prayer book and is placed next to naked human figures (most often female) in various poses. Through such images, he explores the connections between pleasure and pain, life and death, holiness and sin, beauty and depravity. In making the prints, he employs photography, photocopy, collaging and overprinting.
