Alan Green, Four to One Cream Over Crimson, 1976, colour etching; recipient of the International Jury Prize, 14th International Biennial of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana, 1981.

The exhibition included seventeen prints made between 1972 and 1982. Alan Green was one of the great British abstract artists who only occasionally worked in graphic art; he created mostly etchings. The textures of his etchings were created with a line alone. The etchings were made cyclically and reflected the changes that had occurred in their making. He often additionally treated, scratched, ground and etched old plates, so much so that they shrunk to a fourth of their original size. With their gently modulated colours and carefully treated surfaces addressing us from the paper, the appearance of his prints is in stark contrast with the exciting process of the making of the plates.
