The 15th Istanbul Biennial, which was titled “A Good Neighbour”, explored different notions of home and neighbourhood and examined how the way we live in our private surroundings has changed over the past decades. The Biennial was accompanied by an international billboard project starting in February 2017, which spread the theme of “a good neighbour” to many different cities around the world (Manchester, Sidney, Havana, Delhi). The project was also hosted at the 32nd Biennial of Graphic Arts in Ljubljana. A carefully chosen selection of photographs by Lukas Wassmann, showing unexpected encounters, was presented. Questions were paired with the images enquiring about the qualities that make someone a good neighbour and how neighbourhoods are changing around the world. The project was produced as a collaboration between the curators Elmgreen & Dragset, the graphic designer Rupert Smyth and the artist Lukas Wassmann.
