Exhibition of the Audience Award Recipients of the 35th Ljubljana Biennale of Graphic Arts

The collective Sreda v sredo (Wednesday Group, SVS) was founded in 2019 by Žiga Artnak (1986), Urban Cerjak (1986) and Matic Flajs (1994). What began as a casual weekly gathering of friends with the simple idea of exploring artistic techniques and creative concepts, gradually evolved into a group with a distinct identity. In the basement of one of the three Dukič apartment blocks (1935) in the centre of Ljubljana, the members transformed a disused boiler room into a print studio, embracing the “do-it-together” ethic, where they create their own works or collaborate with guests, mainly using intaglio printmaking techniques.

As part of the 35th Ljubljana Biennale of Graphic Arts, SVS Studio opened its doors every Friday from 3 to 6 pm, becoming both a Biennale venue and a relaxed workspace and meeting point. Over the course of 17 sessions, the studio welcomed various artists and hosted more than 200 visitors from Belgium, Germany, France, Switzerland, Poland, Australia, Slovakia, India and Romania. Together, they created more than 20 graphic works. SVS received the Audience Award at the Biennale.

The exhibition in the “S” Gallery at Ljubljana Castle showcased the creative process of the members of the collective. This springs from their individual artistic ambitions, which they are able to pursue more easily as part of an art community. On view were prints by the SVS collective and a selection of graphic works by artists whom the members had hosted in the workshop during its operation. The exhibition sought to highlight the workings of a self-organised art community, whose aims are continuous artistic development, exploration of relief printmaking techniques, collaboration and networking with other artists in the field of contemporary graphic arts, and the set-up of the production conditions necessary for such an operation.

The exhibitors included: SVS (Žiga Artnak, Urban Cerjak and Matic Flajs) and guests: Filip Burburan, Jure Engelsberger, Martin Fujan, Marko Gavez, Petja Kocet, David Krančan, Peter Kuntarič, Matija Medved, Maja Poljanc, Tereza Prepadnik, Valentin Radulović and Hana Stupica.

Curator of the exhibition: Božidar Zrinski.
